The Process
This project was designed to support multi-generational living by creating a new, self-contained living suite for the clientβs motherβallowing family to live close by while preserving privacy, autonomy, and a true sense of home. The primary goal was to ensure the addition felt intentional and seamless, as though it had always been part of the original house.
A light-filled breezeway connects the main home to the new living unit. With French doors on either end, the breezeway functions as an indoor-outdoor room that can be enjoyed year-round, offering flexibility for everyday living and family gatherings alike. Vaulted ceilings in the breezeway and main living area create an airy, open feel, allowing the efficient floor plan to feel larger than its footprint. Subtle architectural details, including arched doorways, add softness and visual interest while tying the new construction to the character of the existing home.
The new suite includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with main-floor laundry to support comfortable, independent living. Below, a full basement provides space for future expansionβaccommodating an additional bedroom, extended living areas, and ample storage as needs evolve over time. The result is a thoughtfully designed living environment that balances closeness and independenceβsupporting family connection while respecting the rhythms of everyday life.
